A twin with average numbers

Imagine a business exactly like yours, same type, same sales, but with every other number at the industry average. What it would be worth tells you how much your own numbers are adding. For the sample, the average twin is worth $2.09M. The sample is worth $3.93M.

The engine re-runs itself on an industry-median peer: the same business type and revenue, with every other input at the archetype median. The difference between that and the concluded value is what the company’s own figures add.

  3. 2The five-move plan+$2.00M

How to read it. The first bar is the average twin. The first step is what the sample already does better than average. The second step is what the plan would add on top.

Where the difference comes from

Two numbers explain most of it. Each figure below is an engine re-run with that one input moved to the median, everything else unchanged.

  1. Customer churn at the median, 9%, instead of 4.7%the biggest reason the value sits above the multiples−$909k
  2. Service margin at the median, 68%, instead of 62%the margin objective targets 66%+$404k

Low churn is the sample’s biggest strength: at the median rate the value would fall by $909k. Its margin is its biggest weakness: at the median it would rise by $404k. That’s also the shape of the plan, which protects the first and goes after the second.

Why medians, and which ones

The medians the engine prices with are the archetype table written into the valuation policy and stamped with its version. Benchmarks from new industry research place your business on the landscape and feed the back-test, but they can’t move the value until the policy is changed, and the change is recorded.

The same comparison runs in the studio: a question you skip uses the median, and the live valuation shows how far your answers have moved the value from the industry-default read.

  • Peer. same archetype and trailing revenue; every other input at the policy median for the archetype
  • What it’s used for. the gray reference line on the football field, the comparison in the live valuation, and the “what your figures add” bar
  • Not used for. the concluded value; it never enters the weighting
  • Versioned. medians come from the valuation policy, not the latest dossier, so a run can be replayed exactly
